Green Bee Eater

Kalyani Prasher @ Kanha National Park

The green bee eater is a small green bird (isn’t that surprising). Very early on I learnt that bird names are very literal and double as a guide to identifying birds. You will need a LOT of guides and hints and helps and you will never be able to identify all the birds in the world but that’s okay. I can now recognize the green bee eater. It is small, it has a sharp long bill, a distinctive black line across its eyes, but, most of all, it is impossibly bright green. It flits about in the dry grass, bright as a beacon, and can be spotted from miles away even in lush green trees because of its stand out colouring. There are several types of bee eaters, the world of birds is made to confuse you and make you feel incapable of knowing the simplest of things, but I have confidently learnt to identify the common green bee eater and here is a photograph I took this year (the dreaded 2020) on my latest trip to Kanha National Park. This was the last trip I took before the lockdowns and restrictions so it is very dear to me and I will post some more bird photos from the trip by and by.

All my bird photos here may or may not have a story. All my bird descriptions are not scientific. They are meant to be fun, and describe birds as I see and understand them. One day I will write more about how I fell in love with birds. I am still trying to understand that? But more often I will put up bird photos and thoughts and half-thoughts here about things that interest, move or annoy me. More to come.
